Welcome to the Apocalypse

War. War never changes.

"The end of the world occurred pretty much as we had predicted: too many humans, not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons - as always - purely human ones. The Earth was nearly wiped clean of life. A great cleansing, an atomic spark struck by human hands quickly raged out of control. Spears of nuclear fire rained from the skies, continents were swallowed in flames and fell beneath the boiling oceans. Humanity was almost extinguished, their spirits becoming part of the background radiation that blanketed the Earth. A quiet darkness fell across the planet, lasting many years. Few survived the devastation. Some had been fortunate enough to reach safety, taking shelter in great underground vaults. When the great darkness passed, these vaults opened, and their inhabitants emerged to begin their lives again…"

The year is 2194 A.D. It has been thirty years since the legend of the Vault Dweller spread across the Wastes, and almost one-hundred and twenty since the bombs fell. The world that was shattered by the onslaught of a nuclear holocaust now plays host to the laughable remnants of humanity. Slavers and bandits, tyrants and weaselly bureaucrats: they were the first to slither their way back up to the top, and there are plenty of them around. For the most part they have the run of things, and you can't go far without running into one variety or another.

As if this weren't enough, life on the earth today is set against the backdrop of the Wastes. 'The Wastes' has become a term that literally translates to everywhere people don't live - which is roughly 99.9% of the planet's surface. The vast majority of the earth is uninhabitable, either because of radioactivity, a lack of any resources, dangerous wildlife, or a combination of all three. Speaking of wildlife, it's hard to say whether it's fared better or worse than the race that tried to destroy it. Oh, the animals are still around, sure - but they're not the same ones Old MacDonald was raising back in the good ol' days.

Civilization - not that any of the shabby settlements and strongholds that have managed to cling to some semblance of order could really rightfully be called that - is gradually reawakening. The pulse of human life is weak, but it's getting stronger by the year as mankind (perhaps foolishly) refuses to give up in the aftermath of their self-created Apocalypse.

In the part of the world that used to be referred to as 'Texas', hope flickers a little more brightly than elsewhere. The island city of New Galveston has managed to restore something not entirely unlike the civility of the ancient world - although it's also plagued by a corrupt local government, a far less reputable sister-city that always seems to be nipping at its heels, and the ever-present Super Mutant threat in the north. The near future holds a great amount of uncertainty for the people of New Galveston and the areas surrounding it, and the opportunists are coming out of the woodwork to try and swing the pendulum of balance in their favor.

Perhaps you are one of these opportunists, seeking to make a fortune or find a place among the rich and powerful. Or perhaps you care nothing for the vestiges of human society, choosing to trod your own path out in the barren Wastes with a few reliable companions. Or it may be that you're an outcast, or worse yet, a repulsive Ghoul or despicable Super Mutant. It's rumored that these 'races' have their own ratholes and hiding places, but who would want to know?

Whatever you are, there's a place for you in the Wastes. The Wastes welcome - and devour - all who are willing to come.
